Don Quixote Country (Madrid ~ Spain)

29 September 2022

About 50 kms south of Madrid is the very picturesque town if Toledo and is easily accessible by train - assuming of course that the ticket booking system doesn't go down and the booking staff tell you it's not working. However the main station is quite cool as it includes a large botanical garden.

A metro trip from the train station got us to the bus station and on a bus to Toledo, a little later than planned but we got there.

Weren't aware until we got there that Miguel de Cervantes (widely regarded as the greatest writer in the Spanish language and is best known for his novel Don Quixote) is a popular figure in Toledo as a part of Don Quixotes travels takes him through Toledo.

Toledo is apparently well known for the production of knives and swords - which did explain the preponderance of shops selling these goods.

Spent the day having a pleasent wander around and skipped actually entering any churches, museums etc as feeling a bit saturated with religion by that stage. However whatever your beliefs are you can't help but admire the architecture and details on the various cathederals and churches in Spain. Here high above the doorway and just visible is a carving of the last supper.

Beautiful architecture everywhere.

There was one museum that we, ok Richard, checked out and that was display of siege weapons.

Our last dinner is Spain included a few typical Spanish things, such as Tinto Verana (red wine with lemon flavoured sparkling water), red peppers stuffed with Bacalhau and of course to finish it all off a glass of Pedro Ximénez.

Now if you've never tried PX then I suggest that the next time you have a meal out order a glass of PX, but be warned it will cost more than the $4 this generous pour cost.

Last day in Spain tomorrow and then we're off to Tunisia.
